Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage
Description

The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation, is one of the most unique and heartwarming wildlife attractions in the world. Located 90 km from Colombo near the town of Kegalle, the orphanage is home to the world's largest gathering of captive elephants. The herd of over 80 elephants includes orphaned calves rescued from the wild, injured animals, and generations born at the orphanage. Twice daily, the entire herd walks through the village to bathe in the Maha Oya River ? a spectacular sight that draws visitors from around the globe. Visitors can observe feeding, bathing, and even assist with milk feeds for the baby elephants.
